Russian Railways has created a travel card for air travel and high-speed trains

A single travel card for air travel and high-speed trains may soon appear in Russia. Alexander Misharin, First Vice President of OAO Russian Railways, made the announcement, as ITAR-TASS reports. Proposals are currently discussed as part of the development of a fare policy for the Moscow-Kazan high-speed rail line.

Misharin cited the example of Germany, where a passenger can use a single ticket to travel by both air and high-speed train. He added that the socially oriented fare system will take account of weekend trips, family and student travel.

In January, it was reported that the government intends to postpone the construction of the Moscow-Kazan Highway indefinitely. According to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, the decision will be postponed until “the economy returns to more vigorous growth.”

According to the initial project, the state must provide more than 70 percent of the financing for the line. However, funds cannot currently be found due to the austerity program. Currently, OAO Russian Railways is working on an alternative project whereby the state monopoly will assume most of the costs for constructing the first stage of the HSR line.

In the summer, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to allocate the first RUB 16 billion for the project costs by the end of the year, but JSC Russian Railways has not received this money, just as it has not received RUB 150 billion from the National Wealth Fund. Moreover, the project has been criticized by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economic Development.

The Moscow-Kazan Highway is the first high-speed train line to operate trains at 350-400 kilometers per hour. The distance between the two cities can be covered in three hours instead of the current fourteen. The total project cost is RUB 1.068 trillion.
