The car is on its way

The Urals has launched a project to construct a high-speed railway line to link megacities Chelyabinsk and Yekaterinburg. Government of the Chelyabinsk Region signed a partnership agreement with the Federal Center for Project Finance to deal with the high-speed railway line construction. The partnership will act as a management company and at the first phase will take up preparation of pre-design documentation, set up a pool of concession-based investors and industrial enterprises to participate in the project. So why does the Urals region need the 238 km long high-speed railway line? According to the Infrastructure Economics Centre, motor road transport is currently the preferred way of travelling between Chelyabinsk and Yekaterinburg: buses and cars carry 5.6 million people, while the railway hardly carries 35 thousand. Given the condition of М5 road, it takes three to four hours to get from one city to the other. The Urals high-speed line will reduce the travel time to one hour. So in a year after the launch (in 2021, Editor’s note) passenger traffic is projected to reach 2.4 million. Global practice shows that high-speed communication strongly drives economic growth. It is no wonder that the global HSR leader is China with over 47 percent of all high-speed lines currently operating in the world. The Urals also expects its economic processes to boost. The authorities are sure that the one-hour long communication between megacities will create Russia's third-largest agglomeration with a population over three million. Source: Rossiyskaya Gazeta
